Does Atlas Browser Support Chrome Extensions?
On October 21, OpenAI released Atlas Browser, a new AI-powered browser built right into ChatGPT. It combines browsing, search, and reasoning in a single interface — basically turning the web into an extension of ChatGPT itself. You can read the official announcement here.
For now, Atlas is available only for macOS, and OpenAI hasn’t shared many technical details yet. However, several early reviews and user tests suggest that Atlas is built on Chromium, which is what powers Chrome, Edge, and other modern browsers.
That’s why many people (including us) decided to try installing Chrome extensions — and it works.
The Tom’s Guide review notes that Atlas resembles Chrome closely, with ChatGPT fully integrated into the browsing experience. You can ask questions, summarize pages, and use AI tools right on the site you’re visiting. The main downsides for now are limited customization and some uncertainty about how extension support will evolve.
Testing Chrome Extensions (and Ad Blocking)
We tested our own Stands Adblocker extension by installing it directly from the Chrome Web Store into Atlas Browser.
It installed smoothly — and worked right away.
On YouTube, no ads were shown when the ad blocker was active. However, the extension’s internal stats showed zero blocked ads. With the ad blocker turned off, ads immediately appeared again.
At first, we thought maybe Atlas has some built-in ad protection, but that doesn’t seem to be the case — without an extension, YouTube ads play normally.
And just for fun, we even asked Atlas itself: “Can I use Chrome extensions in Atlas Browser?” The AI confidently replied no.

Of course, AI can be wrong — but it’s funny to see Atlas not knowing its own capabilities yet.
Conclusions
- Atlas Browser currently supports Chrome extensions, even though OpenAI hasn’t officially confirmed it.
- Stands Adblocker works, though stats might not display correctly.
- Atlas is currently available only for macOS.
- The browser is likely Chromium-based, but OpenAI might eventually introduce its own extension ecosystem.
- For now, everything runs fine — but this could change as Atlas develops.
We’ll keep testing and tracking how Atlas handles extensions (and ad blocking) over time.
