OpenAI Introduces Ads in ChatGPT: Here’s How It Works
In early 2026, OpenAI began testing advertising inside ChatGPT. For some users in the United States, sponsored content may now appear below AI responses during conversations.
At first glance, the idea is simple: free access is supported by ads. Easy as it sounds. But once you move from websites to conversational AI, the details matter.
In this article, we explain who sees ads, where they appear, how ad relevance works, what advertisers can (and can’t) access, how to manage your settings, and how to avoid ads entirely if you prefer an uninterrupted experience.
Until recently, ChatGPT was largely ad-free. This update introduces a new funding model — without changing how answers are generated. Let’s look at how it actually works.

Who Sees Ads in ChatGPT?
Not everyone will see ads.
For now, advertising is limited to logged-in users in the United States who are on Free or Go plans. If you’re subscribed to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Edu, you won’t see ads.
Note that users identified as under 18 are also excluded.
This controlled rollout allows OpenAI to test how ads function in a conversational environment before expanding further. It’s a measured approach rather than a full global launch.
Where Do Ads Appear?
Ads in ChatGPT are not pop-ups. They don’t interrupt your sentence. They don’t replace the AI’s answer.
Instead, sponsored content appears below the AI’s response and is clearly labeled as “Sponsored.”
Here’s how the flow works:
- You ask a question.
- ChatGPT generates its answer.
- If relevant, a sponsored message may appear underneath.
The answer comes first. The ad comes after. That’s the structure.
Ads are not shown in temporary chats, logged-out sessions, image generation results, or the ChatGPT Atlas browser.

How Ad Relevance Works
Relevance is primarily based on the content of your current conversation.
If you’re asking about travel tools, productivity software, or online services, the system may display a related ad underneath the response.
If personalized ads are enabled, the system may also consider previous interactions within ChatGPT — such as earlier conversations or past engagement with ads.
If personalized ads are turned off, only the current conversation is used to determine relevance. That’s it.
You control which mode applies in your settings. Context-only or personalized — your choice.
Do Advertisers See Your Conversations?
This is where many users pause.
According to OpenAI’s documentation, advertisers do not receive access to individual conversations, chat histories, names, email addresses, or precise location data.
They receive aggregated performance data — things like impressions and engagement rates. In other words, they can see how a campaign performs overall, but they cannot see who asked what.
No transcript sharing. No individual message access. No advertiser backdoor into your chats. Simple as that.

Can You Turn Ads Off?
Yes — and there are two ways to do it.
The first option is upgrading to a paid subscription. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans remain fully ad-free.
The second option is enabling Ad-Free mode within the free tier. However, this comes with reduced usage limits. You may have lower daily message caps or limited access to certain advanced features.
The structure is clear:
- Free plan with ads
- Free Ads-Free mode with limits
- Paid plans with no ads and full access
You decide what works best for you.
How to Manage Ad Preferences
ChatGPT includes ad controls inside account settings.
You can:
- Turn personalized ads on or off
- See why a specific ad appeared
- Dismiss ads and provide feedback
If an ad doesn’t feel relevant, you can say so. That feedback helps refine future placements.
The explanation feature is particularly useful. It shows whether an ad was triggered by the current conversation or broader personalization signals. Transparency is built into the system — not hidden behind layers.
Adjusting these settings is quick. A few clicks, toggle the option, done. Easy as it sounds :)

Are There Restrictions on When Ads Appear?
Yes.
Ads are not shown next to certain sensitive topics. These include:
- Health or medical discussions
- Political conversations
Ads are also not shown to users identified as minors.
This helps reduce the risk of inappropriate placements and maintains a more thoughtful user experience.
A Different Approach: Claude Stays Ad-Free
Not every AI company is moving in that direction.
Claude, developed by Anthropic, has publicly stated thatit does not plan to introduce ads into its chatbot.
According to company leadership, AI assistants are often used for sensitive, personal, or professional tasks. Conversations may include business planning, financial questions, emotional topics, or private ideas. Placing sponsored messages alongside those interactions could change how users perceive the space.
Anthropic’s position is that conversational AI should feel neutral and independent. Instead of advertising, the company wants to focus on subscriptions and enterprise partnerships as its primary revenue model.
That means Claude users will not see sponsored placements inside conversations.
The difference is simple: ChatGPT is experimenting with advertising to support free access. Claude chose to remain ad-free and rely on other funding models.
Neither approach is right nor wrong. They show different views on how AI platforms can balance accessibility, sustainability, and user experience.
For users, it comes down to preference.
If you’re comfortable with clearly labeled sponsored content beneath responses, ChatGPT’s model may feel completely natural. If you prefer a fully ad-free environment by default, other assistants may better align with that expectation.

Why Introduce Ads Now?
Operating large-scale AI systems requires significant computing resources and ongoing research investment.
While subscription plans generate revenue, a large portion of users remain on the free tier. Advertising provides an additional funding stream that supports continued development while keeping free access available.
The logic is straightforward: maintain accessibility while building sustainability. Simple as that.
The introduction of ads doesn’t change how ChatGPT answers questions. It changes how the platform supports itself financially.
Does Advertising Change the AI’s Answers?
OpenAI states that ads do not influence response generation.
The AI model produces its answer independently. Only after that does the advertising system determine whether a relevant sponsored placement should appear below it.
Advertisers cannot modify answers. They cannot prioritize certain responses. They cannot insert messaging into generated text.
Two separate systems operate independently — one for generating answers, one for placing ads.
That separation is essential for maintaining trust.
What This Means for Users
If you are a free user in the United States, you may now see sponsored messages beneath certain ChatGPT responses.
The conversational experience remains the same. You ask. The AI answers. If relevant, a labeled ad appears below. That’s the flow.
You can continue using ChatGPT for free with ads, enable Ads-Free mode with reduced limits, or upgrade to a paid subscription for a completely ad-free experience.
If you are on a paid plan, nothing changes.
The interface remains conversational. The answers remain separate from advertising. The controls remain in your hands.
Free access supported by ads, premium tiers without them.
Understanding how this structure works helps you decide how you want to use ChatGPT going forward. And let's agree, in a space developing as quickly as AI, clarity matters :)
